Klezmer Music

Klezmer Band by Paul Graubard 1998

[English] In this blog article, unpretentiously, will be discussed the overview of klezmer music production today, via a quick historical context, the ways that the music has found in its adaptations and mutations in relation the mixed trend on the world music scene, with comments and postings of records of some representative artists'or groups from today.

The klezmer music had its origins in the fifteenth century through the Jewish people when they occupied parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Jewish music was initially known only as music Yiddish, Klezmer was the term used to designate only the musical instruments, and later went on to also define, in a derogatory manner, the musicians themselves who touched them, due to the character and self-taught without musical training. Subsequently, there were changes in this music in contact with Slavic cultures, Greek Ottoman (Turkish), Gypsy and more recently in the early decades of twentieth century with the development of jazz. Thus, the klezmer  remained on their folk way util the contact with jazz, but little changed until the end of the Nazi period and the Stalinist processes, years that the music basically hibernated. With the resumption of societies after war, and the world Jewish migrations caused by the actions of the war, this this music tradition consequently led to several countries. The rapprochement of the genre with the language of jazz were critical to severe changes in klezmer to come. The use of typical scales, changes in time and rhythm of the music, slight dissonance and a touch of improvisation, klezmer all allowed to acquire more capacity to evoke all kinds of emotions that the artists wanted to express, through a very diverse music .

The technological advancements and communication between societies in recent decades represents another important phase of mutations in this music, as well as in the majority cultures around the world. Despite resistance from some traditional segments, the klezmer music could not be otherwise, and as the Judaic culture being spread on all continents today, you can listen to some klezmer in many countries. Today, a large contingent of artists and groups there is in Europe and the United States especially, and due to the large amounts of fans to the genre, and these are regions where they produce the most innovative ways that expression. With works that transcend the traditions and seek interactions with music, instruments, different forms of cultures, it is possible today to find recordings of klezmer jazz, klezmer jazz fusion, klezmer reggae, klezmer rock, gypsy klezmer, klezmer ska, worldbeat, free jazz, just klezmer, minimalist klezmer, klezmer lounge, klezmer in different forms. Therefore, considering the great diversity of music in today's world, the reader and listener maybe must ask.., how to identify the genre? Well, characteristics that can define the klezmer music, plus the need to understand the melodies that characterize the cultural environment of the Jewish tradition, can be said that a common factor present in the recordings, is the presence of the instrument type, that brand the music, even with the innovations and different ways, is the clarinet. This is an instrument incredibly present in the musical proposals, but also the violin has a place of great prominence in the characterization of music. Other instruments were introduced over time as the acoustic bass, accordion, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, dulcimer and others.

Finally, the blog thinks it is important to emphasize to the reader that the discussion of this topic may have different values of importance for the interested in music, considering the origins of each and their cultural baggage. In other words, example of a European citizen, in which the subject klezmer music may seem trite and obvious, and often everyday, but for many people around the world where this musical culture is not part of the contact and the routine becomes is again an issue and that opens up new music possibilities, a genre of great artistic value.

Becomes unfeasible here, post a detailed discography of changing existing klezmer today, so we were selected and are below six works with great musical quality produced today.
