The Bembe

O Bembe e o Jazz Contemporâneo
The Bembe and the Contemporary Jazz

Abaixo seguem diversos exemplos do bembe aplicado no jazz contemporâneo.

[English] This post aims to discuss the relevance of bembe within the contemporary jazz universe, using samples of music and basic information about the origins of rhythm and how this merger occurred between him and the jazz.

The bembe is a musical or rhythm style born from religious manifestations in Yoruba culture, originally from West Africa, more precisely between countries like Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana. The Yoruba people, and bembe rhythm consequently, migrated to different regions of the world but mostly to the Americas, settling in countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Brazil and the United States.

In each of these countries the bembe was being incorporated on national cultures. In Cuba, beyond bembe the African matrix designed a wide range of popular rhythms such as cha-cha, danzón, guaguancó, tumbao, guajira, mambo, son, Mozambique, and several others. At this time Cuba stood out for its cultural force and recognized as a true melting pot of rhythms, a condition which attracted the attention of North American music market, already booming.

But before bembe establish onto the music scene as a great element for composition, were first used other rhythmic elements of afro Cuban music more accessible to a phase of experimentation, such as the mambo for exemple. Some of the most important rhythms of West Africa are based on a progression 6/8. In Cuba, the most popular rhythm in progress 6/8 is bembe, therefore, as this progress marks a different time and key (listen Bembe Sample 1) in the first moments of this musical fusion the rhythm was not incorporated.

In the 1930s in Cuba, local bands already used elements and melodies of North America jazz as components of their most popular repertoires. But the reverse situation, the North American jazz assimilating the Cuban components only occurred in 1943, considered this as the "year of the merger" among afro Cuban rhythms and North America jazz. This occurs when the Cuban trumpeter and conductor Mario Bauzá released the song "Tanga" in New York, a descarga considered the first piece truly afro Cuban jazz. Other musicians in the late 1940s involved in "afro Cuban musical movement" as Machito, Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo made important experiences that contributed greatly to the development of new musical style. However, their innovative experiments do not always combine rhythmically. For example, the performance of "Manteca" in 1948, launched by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo, the pattern of the clave was played at 3-2, while the band was played over the 2-3 clave. Despite his initial problems, "Manteca" proved to be a strong composition, and is recognized today as the first standard jazz with Cuban clave.

So the bembe rhythm was slowly being assimilated and introduced in the language of jazz. Today it is understood that the bembe, or as many prefer call "Afro-Cuban 6/8", perhaps the most versatile of afro Cuban rhythms, as its power to merge in a wide variety sound as funk, rock, suffle, straigth-ahead jazz, contemporary jazz, jazz fusion, etc. So it was from this musical relationship between Cuba and the United States, the bembe advanced to new musical forms and allowed the creation of other esthetic sound.

Below are shown several examples of bembe applied in contemporary jazz. This compilation allows confirm the importance of rhythm today as a great source for creating, used by the most important musicians of the current music scene. At the end, created by Modus Vivendi blog follows a collection to download The Bembe and Contemporary Jazz, with the complete examples songs shown in this article, besides the information of each song and albums compiled.
